If you’re a homeowner, you know there are some chores you hate but you gotta do. One of these is cleaning your gutters. It’s no secret. Nobody wants to do it. You have a few choices. You can take care of it yourself. You can pay someone to do it for you. Or, you can cross your fingers and pray you don’t end up with a leak.
We don’t suggest you choose that third option!
Unclogging drains is a yucky job but somebody’s gotta do it. And, if you own your home, that somebody is you. But, if you take a few minutes every few weeks, you can save yourself a headache down the road.
There are a few things you want to do to make sure you take good care of your gutters and drains. If you do this, your gutters and drains will take care of you.
You want to check for leaks and blockages every month or so. It doesn’t matter what time of year, you want to make sure there are no leaks or blockages. Walk around the house and check each one. You’re better off doing this about once a month. Maybe twice. If you have a bad storm, even in summer, it’s a good idea to take a peek. See if anything is clogged. If you catch it early, you can prevent an expensive leak later on.
A lot of people think that leaves are the only thing that can clog up your drains. This isn’t true. You could the beginnings of a bird’s nest up there. Or, there could be acorns, pebbles or any other type of debris. Whatever is in the gutters and drains, scoop it out. Make sure you get all the muck out too. This may not be fun, but it’s necessary. If this isn’t done, it will build up and lead to leaks. These leaks can cause very expensive damage to your roof.
If you’re going to use a ladder to check your gutters, which you may have to do, don’t carry garbage bags around with you. It’s already dangerous enough being up on a ladder. This is especially true if you don’t have anyone to spot you while you’re checking the drains. Just position a can or wheelbarrow at the bottom of the ladder so you can toss any leaves and debris in there. This way, you’re not carrying cumbersome and heavy bags up and down the ladder with you.
So, what happens if you do find that you have blockages? These can be caused by stubborn debris. Or, you may have let too much time go by between cleanings. If this happens to you, just take a little bit of bleach and pour it into the drains.
The bleach should clean out anything that’s clogging your gutters and drains. Make sure you wear gloves while handling the bleach. You may also want to wear a dust mask so you don’t breathe in the fumes. If you aren’t comfortable using bleach, you can use drain cleaner or vinegar. They should do the trick nicely.
