The Differences Between Each Type of Roof

The world of roofing has changed significantly over the past three decades. In the past the material most commonly used to make shingles was asphalt. However, today there are many types of shingles from different fabrics. Each type has its pros and cons.

For homeowners who are thinking of a roof replacement, it is important to know the different types of roofs that are available and the difference between each type of roof:

  • Asphalt shingles are the most popular for roof covering and also the most affordable.

    • Today, asphalt shingles have been re-engineered. One can also get organic and fiberglass shingles. These shingles are available in several colors and sizes, and most of them meet the energy star standards and building code requirements. The downside to asphalt shingles is that they do not last long in environments with sudden temperature changes. This can lead to cracking and a shorter lifespan. Also, asphalt shingles are best used on roofs with a steep slope.

  • Fiberglass shingles come with a waterproof coating, are fire resistant, lightweight and very durable.

    • They are also not as expensive as other roofing materials. During the summer, they also prevent the home from warming up like an oven.

  • Organic shingles are heavier than fiberglass but also have waterproofing capability.

    • While inexpensive they do not last as long as fiberglass shingles. The one downside to organic shingles is that they are prone to moisturization and can degrade very quickly, leading to another roof replacement within 15 years.

  • Three tab shingles are relatively inexpensive and light; they also have a lifespan similar to asphalt shingles.

    • Because of the way they are manufactured, it may appear as if three different shingles have been installed.

  • Tile shingles are ideal for homeowners who want a stylish roof. But this also comes with a hefty price tag.

    • These shingles come in many colors and can be molded in many different shapes. Large mansions or colonial type homes use tile shingles and can last quite long. However, they are also pricey to install, and they tend to be heavy. The downside of tile shingles is that they can develop small cracks, leaks, and holes, which may require sealing frequently.

  • Wood shingles are the latest type.

    • They are also one of the most expensive shingles on the market. The advantages of wood shingles are that they are environmentally friendly, very durable (last 30-60 years) and energy efficient. In the summer they keep the home cool, and in winter they keep the home warm. Wood shingles are available in redwood and cedar. However, one major negative about the use of wood shingles is that they are more likely to catch fire than other shingles. In addition, wood shingles can be difficult to install and you must treat it regularly to prevent termite and ant infestations.
